There are many beliefs regarding the nutrition of pregnant women. Some of them are true, but others are merely myths which only create confusion. We’re here to bust some of those myths, and help all the pregnant women out there to have the best pregnancy ever…
Myth #1: “You can’t have any caffeine while pregnant”
Many studies proved that excessive consumption of caffeine while pregnant might have some negative implications on the baby’s health, or even lead to pregnancy complications. However, it doesn’t mean you should completely avoid coffee or tea while pregnant. Simply reduce your caffeine consumption to 1-2 cups per day.
Myth #2: “You can’t have any alcohol while pregnant”
Much like with caffeine, too much alcohol is bad for your baby: it might hurt the baby’s development, cause complications, and even harm the baby’s health later in life. However, a drink every now and then won’t do any harm, as long as it doesn’t exceed 1-2 serves per month.
Myth #3: “Pregnant women eat for two…”
Sorry ladies, being pregnant doesn’t mean nine months of all-you-can-eat buffet… In fact, during the first trimester a pregnant woman shouldn’t have more calories than she usually does, although she should be pickier with what she eats. Only in the second and third trimesters she should have more calories per day, but only about 300.
Myth #4: “I’m the only one getting fat…!”
Many pregnant women find their pregnant body unattractive and might get upset about their appearance. These women might be happy to hear that they’re not alone – most husbands of pregnant women gain about 6-7 kilos during the pregnancy…! There’s actually a scientific name for this phenomenon: Couvade Syndrome!
Myth #5: “Nothing you can do about those morning sicknesses…”
That’s one myth that should be busted as quickly as possible…! 50-80 percent of all pregnant women experience morning sickness. Unfortunately, most of them don’t know there are many natural ways to ease or even completely avoid them. For example, having smaller meals, avoiding hot and humid places and having some ginger or ginger tea.
Myth #6: “Pregnant women shouldn’t exercise…!”
Sure, pregnant women deserve their rest. But does it mean complete slacking for nine months? Of course it doesn’t. Moderate exercise throughout the pregnancy will prevent pregnancy and birth complications, give the mother an easier pregnancy and will help her with quickly getting back to her old figure. Consult with a trainer for a personally customized training program while pregnant.
Myth #7: “Vegetarian and vegan women should start having meat while pregnant”
This is yet another inaccurate notion. Indeed, some vegetarian and vegan pregnant women should have some meat or poultry while pregnant. But this is the case mostly for women who are underweight or experiencing health issues. However, most women who prefer to avoid animal products won’t have to change their diet. A good, well-balanced vegetarian or vegan menu should contain all the nutritional ingredients your baby needs while pregnant. Simply consult with your doctor or dietitian to plan a personally customized pregnancy menu.
